Zagreb Farmer's Market

I returned from a short trip to Europe a few days ago and wanted to share some photos of the city of my birth, Zagreb, the capital of Croatia. The market at the cathedral is the biggest in town and always has amazing fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Local Choice Produce Market, every city should open one of these, a local,privately owned farmers market under a roof, in Portland and in the Pearl this is a great thing!

We loved it today, sunny and great strawberries, too many baby strollers though and they don’t let dogs in anymore!
We got a buckwheat crepe with bacon, cheese and baby greens in it!

fresh tomatillosjohn loves fresh salsa and these will be amazing, a great recipe follows…

fresh tomatillos

Tomatillo Salsa:

  • 1 pound tomatillos, husked and rinsed
  • 1 jalapeno, stemmed
  • 1 small Spanish onion, quartered
  • 5 to 6 garlic cloves
  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt
  • 1 bunch fresh cilantro, leaves coarsely chopped
  • 1 lime, juiced


Roast the tomatillos, jalapeno, onion, garlic, and 1 tablespoon salt until the tomatillos are soft but have not burst. Add the cooked vegetables to a blender with the cilantro leaves and lime juice.  Taste and adjust seasoning with more cilantro, lime juice, or salt according to preference.
